Trip to the Farmers Market

Beets!   Good.

Beets from the Farmers Market!   Sooooo good.

Aren't these gorgeous?   Everything about them screams earthy perfection.   Dirt covered and all.

Enough about the beets.   We made it to the NC Farmers Market this weekend for the first time in, well, forever.   I don't know why I avoid the Farmers Market in the colder months, seems easier to just order the CSA box.    But as soon as warmer weather arrives, this is definitely one of my favorite destinations.   So much to choose from, so much eye candy!

We filled our bags to the brim.    Spring onions, tomatoes, broccoli, strawberries, peas...

Check out these potatoes...

They made us giggle (Farmer's Market humor).

We wandered over to the flowers.   John and I apparently have different methods in choosing our spring plants.   I was all set to pick out bunches of beauties to plant in our yard and garden and display on our front porch.   John suggested we make a plan first.   Sigh.   (Although it means we will be back this weekend!)

Rounded the trip out with a visit to the pork farmer.   That's him... the actual farmer.    (We picked up a package of fresh bratwurst, which I proceeded to make, Wisconsin style, and they were fabulous.)

All in all, a great visit.   Looking forward to our return this weekend.

Do you have a local Farmer's Markets?    Any favorite must haves during your visits?

  1. I love farmers markets! We are lucky enough to live next to one that opens every Saturday--since we live in Cali it's the best place to go for some really good aloo gobi naan wraps and these addicting Persian spinach stuffed pitas--I just live for the free samples! But I really missed it when I went to college and no longer had aisles of farmers and cooks giving us food directly from the source.

  2. I wish my farmers market had fresh meats! Oh, and the flowers, Beautiful! You have an awesome farmer's market!

  3. I haven't been to the farmer's market yet this year, but I'm dying to go! We have a small one close to us, and a big one in downtown KC. I usually just hit the small one!

  4. I Love farmers markets!!!!
It's the first place I visit whenever I travel and my favorite way of starting weekend in the city.

  5. Hi Emily,

  7. Looks like a fabulous market...our local one is ok, but not awesome. We have a couple of really good ones, but they are over an hour away, but we will often make a Sunday day trip out of it.

Love the beets!!! Yum...we are into them cold chopped up on a spinach salad lately with goat cheese and some rosemary brown sugar pecans!!

ps...your shortbread is going out this afternoon...finally, sorry for the delay, McLaren's just emailed me last night and told me the fresh batch was ready. I'll send you the tracking # later today. :-)

Meeling - That beet salad sounds amazing. We eat spinach salads (almost) every night... I might have to slip this into rotation (John is not a fan, but rosemary brown sugar pecans might convert him) ... and thank you ... can't wait!!

Thanks so much for your comments! I love hearing from you and read each and every one!
